“Nothing
in this world you see / compares to the hope we have
when we believe / real life hasn’t started yet”
With these very
words from the title track of his fourth album ‘Real
Life’, a wiser, more mature Corey Brooks is ready to
share this hope with the world.
At 17, this
singer-songwriter and soon to be actor, has seen more
than his share of award shows and sold out venues.
With a resume, that of a veteran in the industry, he
garnished a Gospel Music Association ‘Dove’ nomination
for Country Gospel Album of the Year. He received the
Presidents Award for Outstanding Achievement from the
International Country Gospel Music Association and
took home the win for New Artist of the Year from the
Inspirational Country Music Awards, all among his most
notable honors. (see page 3 for complete list)
With the 2006 album
success of ‘About You’, Corey felt a greater challenge
in making his new album ‘Real Life’. “The concept
of this album was to sing about life experiences, just
to be real, to be me,” explains Corey. “I
have such a diverse age range of fans, I wanted to
bridge that gap and have something everyone could
relate to without compromising my concept. I feel this
is a great success with ‘Real Life.’ “
As in the past three
albums, Corey once again has contributed several
self-penned songs. The upbeat song ‘Six Feet Under,’
opens the eyes of the listener to the fact that we
cannot walk around ‘spiritually dead’ and be of any
effect to God’s Kingdom. While the ballad ‘ Granny
Jean,’ is a slow Inspirational Country song that tugs
at the heart and reminds us to let the people we care
about know how we feel. Another powerful song, ‘See
You Here,’ written on the night of hearing of a
friends loved one dying in a car crash. “It’s a
different kind of song for me. Through alot of
emotions, I think I realized that sometimes, being the
imperfect humans that we are, we question when tragedy
has come our way. In the end we just accept that part
of life is accepting death and by letting God see us
through the healing process we can cherish the
memories.” ‘Your Always There’ has a bluegrass
feel to it, while ‘Don’t Have to Leave’ co-written
with Charles Cook has more of a praise and worship
contemporary sound. Also included is Corey’s version
of ‘Whatever,’ ‘Power in the Blood,’ a rendition of
‘I’ll Fly Away Medley,’ ‘Seven Sundays’ and his title
song ‘Real Life’ that is already proven to be a mass
favorite among test crowds.
Corey has always
contributed his career decisions and love for music as
a ‘God thing’. “I remember sitting in the pew
coloring in a book, and the preacher, my Uncle Bobby,
was telling how we all needed Jesus, I was only five
at the time…but I got it! I asked Jesus into my
heart right then and was baptized the next week,”
Corey recalls. “When I was twelve, I KNEW God
wanted me to do something. I did not realize that it
was what I was already doing…singing, until almost a
year later. It seems like before I knew it, He was
taking me down paths I never dreamed, and I love
it,” exclaims Corey.
From the very
beginning, the entire family has believed that
Ministry and Career can coexist. “As long as God
is glorified, ministry/career will be no more or no
less than what God intends it to be,” explains
Corey’s Mom. ” We have to be diligent on our
part, not listen to the negativity of those that try
to make ‘it’ less than what it is, and God WILL make
‘it’ what he wants it to be.”
In June 2004, Corey
accepted a recording contract with Lamon Records.
“We are excited to work with Corey. We not only
believe in his talent, but we believe in his ministry
for the Lord,” said Dave Moody, President of
Lamon Records. Almost four years and three CD’s later,
Corey still feels that signing with Lamon has been a
great growth experience. With worldwide radio air
play, national distribution on-line and retail,
recognition by major music industry professionals and
organizations, calls from concert promoters to open
for such people as Newsboys and T-Bone, music videos
for 2007, film opportunities, churches, youth camps,
fairs, and even schools, ministry and career
opportunities have flourished.
